Dr.
Linda Stillman
Culture and Communication
Consultant; Outreach Specialist; Member Board of Directors MDG Global
Watch
Understanding the impact of culture on
communication and, thereby, gender is core to the education and
implementation
of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) around the globe. To ensure
their
sustained advancement and ultimate success under the popular UN motto:
Think
Global: Act Local, MDG activists from stratified backgrounds need to
nourish
and nurture interpersonal relations with peoples from all cultures.

stresses urgent needs on local and international levels, and reviews
effects of

Progress
of the MDG Water Supply and Sanitation Target
Adrianus
(Ton) Vlugman
Environmental Health Engineer at
the PAHO/WHO.
The
burden of disease thru poor water supply, inadequate access to sanitary
facilities and poor personal hygiene is very high. In the developing
world, the
mortality rate of infants is about twice as high than in children ages
1 to 4. Much
work remains to be done: now, but also after 2015.
Even if the targets are achieved, 0.8 billion people
will be
without safe drinking water and 1.8 billion people without access to
basic
sanitation.
The
Challenge Of Improving The Lives Of
Elderly Women In Pakistan
Dr. Ra’ana Mahmood
Founding President of Geriatrics
Care Foundation of Pakistan; Member Board of Advisors MDG Global Watch
Despite several strides in the economic and
political spheres, Pakistan unfortunately needs to do far more in the
social
sector, particularly for improving the lives of its elderly women.
Government
has no formal support system for elderly regarding shelter and
Health
Care. Dr. Mahmood states, “This
negligence is creating frustration among the senior citizens. The
entire
national scene in this regard needs to be transformed not only by our
society,
which must reflect on this requisite in a focused manner, but also by
the
government, which ought to formulate a proper code and legislative
discipline”.
